VIDEO ART YOU CAN DANCE TO
MIXED TAPE: a new style VJ performance by Ryan Stec
For this unique outdoor screening, I reached back into the 70s and 80s generations of video history to create a new viewing experience. This one-time only event was more than just a screening – it was a live set. A taste of some of the best video flavours that history has to offer, reorganized and represented, as have never been seen before.
Mixed Tape was presented by the Available Light Screening Collective in the SAW Complex Courtyard beginning at 9:30 PM on Sunday, July 31st 2005.
Before the rise of the MP3 and the lightning speed of peer-to-peer, the mix tape was how people shared music. Crafted with love and care, music flowed from tape click to tape click, destined for a best friend’s car stereo or a new love’s walkman. Each mix tape was a unique document of, not only the maker’s taste, but also, of a specific time and place. The video program “MIXED TAPE” tries to capture the tape-to-tape spirit that drove millions to record and re-record as new ways to organize the soundtrack for the world around us were discovered.
Also performing under the Sunday, July 31st summer stars in the SAW Courtyard will be the extended members of the CONFIGURE VIDEO SOUND SYSTEM. This ensemble of talented artist-geeks will deliver beautiful live video and audio fit for a perfect long weekend Sunday.
